What is your proposal?
Your research proposal is your rationale and plan for the project you will undertake. Your proposal will typically include the following sections.
Introduction:
Materials and Methods:
The process of developing your proposal will typically involve:
Through this process, you will also consider the constraints of your study system. These will inform the type and modality of information you are able to collect.
Introduction:
- Why is your question of interest relevant?
- What is known about it?
- What are the gaps that you will address?
Materials and Methods:
- Brainstorm variables that address your question of interest
- Brainstorm methods that best capture those variables
The process of developing your proposal will typically involve:
- Reading scientific literature
- Having discussions with others
- Developing hypotheses and predictions
- Brainstorming data collection strategies to ensure you choose an appropriate sampling scheme (e.g., continuous vs. time sampling) for your variables of interest; see Bateson and Martin (2021) for more guidance on this step
Through this process, you will also consider the constraints of your study system. These will inform the type and modality of information you are able to collect.
